If your company handles overseas financial transactions or investment, an LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) code is not optional — many US and European counterparties, banks, and regulators now require one before they'll process a transaction.
What is an LEI?
A 20-character standardized international identifier — a corporate equivalent of a resident registration number — assigned to any legal entity participating in financial transactions worldwide. Introduced after the 2008 financial crisis to improve transparency, an LEI is now mandatory across the US, EU, and UK for over-the-counter derivatives trading, credit ratings, securities issuance, and bank lending.
How to apply in Korea
LEI codes are issued in Korea exclusively through the Korea Securities Depository (KSD), via the LEI-K system:
- Register on the LEI-K system
- Submit the issuance application and parent-company/ownership-structure information
- Upload required documents
- Pay the fee
- KSD review and data verification
- Issuance and publication
Required documents: business registration certificate, corporate registry, a company seal certificate issued within the last 3 months plus power of attorney, an SME certification (if eligible for the fee discount), and proof of the parent-subsidiary relationship (business report, audit report, or similar showing the exact ownership percentage).
Watch for: where a parent/subsidiary ownership structure or a legal-entity event (merger, spin-off) is involved, the Global LEI Foundation (GLEIF)'s specific data-entry rules apply — a detail a first-time filer easily misses.
Fee and timeline
New issuance costs ₩110,000 (VAT included), reduced with an SME certification. Review and issuance typically take 1–2 business days once the fee is paid and documents are complete — longer if KSD requests corrections.
The renewal most companies miss
An LEI is not permanent — it must be renewed annually to stay valid. Once it lapses, overseas financial transactions requiring the code can be blocked until it's renewed. For a single-entity company the LEI-K portal is self-serve, but companies with a parent/subsidiary structure or a recent corporate event often need help matching GLEIF's documentation standard — and someone tracking the annual renewal date so the code never lapses.
